North Central Telephone Cooperative
History In 1949, the Rural Electrification Agency (now referred to as the Rural Utilities Service) authorized low-cost loans to assist in the organization and construction of rural telephone services. Up until that time, the people in rural Tennessee and rural Kentucky were largely without good, dependable telephone service because it was not possible for large for-profit telephone companies to provide that service in areas where the population was so sparse and the land was so rugged. In March 1951, the North Central Telephone Cooperative (NCTC) was organized and began the difficult process of providing modern communications facilities to the people of north central Tennessee and south central Kentucky. Through the dedication and hard work of many members and employees, NCTC has succeeded in its objective of providing its members with reliable communications systems comparable to those found in large cities across America. NCTC provides local telephone service in the City of Lafayette, the City of Red Boiling Springs, and the Town of Westmoreland, Tennessee. It also provides local telephone service to rural areas of Macon County, Clay County, Smith County, Sumner County and Trousdale Counties in Tennessee and Allen County in Kentucky, Today, as in the past, NCTC is owned by the customers it serves. It is governed by a board of directors selected by the owner-members. Annual meetings are held, and members are encouraged to participate in the activities of the organization.
